Seven years ago, pursuant to the Pulte strategic planning group, Cornerstone reconfigured its five private schools with 2,000 students into one private and two charter schools. A stronger financial and educational model was created to bring the excellence of a Cornerstone education to more children. This September, more than 3,000 students will be enrolled in a Cornerstone school.
Two years ago we began the “One Cornerstone” project to bring greater financial sustainability and more consistent academic excellence across all Cornerstone Schools. To achieve this, the Cornerstone Education Group (CEG) named Reid Gough as its new CEO. In order to further strengthen the programs for Cornerstone students, and to provide educational excellence to even more children, there are two major “One Cornerstone” initiatives that will take place in the 2017-18 school year.
First, Cornerstone’s private primary and middle schools, located on Nevada Street, will be reconfigured to become the Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy, a Cornerstone Education Group charter school serving grades K-8. This tuition-free school will prepare children for success in high school and beyond. Our goal is to become the #1 public charter school in Detroit. The Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy will deliver the teachings of Jesus curriculum in an after-school program, as will all CEG charter schools beginning in 2017-18.
Second, The Leadership and Business Private High School, our ISACS-accredited, premier high school, will continue at its current location, with goals geared toward higher enrollment and more academic, extracurricular, and career preparation opportunities for its students. The high school will continue to have the life and teachings of Jesus integrated into its daily curriculum. As always, these programs will emphasize the character attributes of love, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, faithfulness, and good citizenship as the foundation of a fulfilling life.
Both the Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy and the Leadership and Business Private High School will incorporate enhanced science, art, music, and athletic opportunities coupled with better technology to ensure that Cornerstone students remain competitive.
