Cornerstone has a unique collaboration with the Cranbrook Educational Community. Located in Bloomfield Hills, it is comprised of a lower, middle and upper (high) school, as well as the Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts, Art Museum, and Institute of Science.
The students of the Cranbrook and the Cornerstone communities unite during a series of academic and social activities at both campuses. Faculties participate in joint professional development workshops, while students participate in team-building exercises, community service, and joint academic studies in areas including linguistics and music. In addition, students take educational field trips to the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Cranbrook Institute of Science, and historical sites in the city of Detroit.
Every year, two Cornerstone graduates receive full, four-year residential scholarships—based on academic merit—to the Cranbrook high school. Former Cornerstone students have consistently flourished there both academically and socially. Cranbrook Educational Community President Rick Nahm says, “When we started the collaborative, I thought we were doing Cornerstone a favor. We have found that Cornerstone does us a favor. The students are well-prepared and offer a new, broader perspective to our Cranbrook family.”
Besides providing significant academic benefits, the collaborative also enriches the educational and cultural experiences for Cranbrook and Cornerstone students and teachers. The program allows students to experience economic, environmental and racial diversity, and gain respect and understanding for each other regardless of cultural differences. Rosalie Wattrick, director of the collaborative, says “the most inspiring part of the program is seeing two groups of exceptionally academic talented students come together with great enthusiasm and an eagerness to learn.” The Cornerstone-Cranbrook collaborative continues to be a brilliant social and academic program that provides two educational communities with invaluable tools and life lessons.
