Foreign Language Program

Cornerstone offers an impressive language program. Beginning in Kindergarten, Cornerstone teaches both Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, the latter of which is fast becoming one of the most popular languages implemented in lower schools and in-demand language in college.

Mandarin Chinese, the official Chinese spoken language, is important because of China’s emergence as an economic power. YiJu Diane Taug, who sees each class once a week, teaches the children not only the language, but also introduces them to authentic Chinese culture. This not only teaches fundamental vocabulary and grammar, but an appreciation for cultural differences.

Cynthia Golick and Nora Baars teach Spanish to students in Kindergarten through the eighth grade. The students learn not only the Spanish language, but of the culture of Spanish-speaking nations.  Students learn about the history of countries like Argentina and Nicaragua. They also celebrate holidays such as the Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo. Art projects, ethnic foods and traditional Spanish songs are often incorporated into the classroom.

In one particular classroom lesson, students are given rice prepared in both Mexican and Chinese styles – the lesson being that the familiar food remains the same, just given a new twist from a different culture. Cornerstone’s language program does not just help prepare its students to communicate; it also teaches them the importance of understanding and appreciating diversity.
