Thank you for supporting our Pistons Scholars!
The 2010 Pistons Scholars night at the Palace on February 19th was a memorable evening for the Cornerstone Community. Approximately 2,000 students, parents, Partners, faculty, staff and friends came out to support our Pistons Scholars and enjoy a night of basketball at the Palace.
Our Cornerstone Pistons Scholars are comprised of more than 500 1st – 8th graders who have achieved excellence in academics, attendance, citizenship and extracurricular activities. Each earned 2 tickets to the Pistons game and participated in a basketball skills clinic on the Palace court prior to the game.
The Cornerstone honors choir, under the direction of Eric Gardner, wowed the Palace crowd with their rendition of the National Anthem. Forty Pistons Scholars welcomed the Detroit Pistons onto the court in “high five tunnels” before the game and at half time. 8th graders Makiya Long and Demetrius Jackson were chosen as Honorary Captains for the evening, and got to accompany the Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks team captains to center court before the game.
The Pistons also honored Washington-Parks Academy 3rd grader Dakari Hodges with a Michigan Hero award. This award is given to those in the community who go above and beyond the call of duty. Dakari experienced a family tragedy early in his life, but remains an upbeat, positive young man. Please click here to view Dakari’s story.
We are grateful to the event Platinum Sponsor, MTU Detroit Diesel for again supporting this event. We are also thankful to the many Partners and friends who made this event possible by honoring our Pistons Scholars through sponsorships and donations. This event continues to be one that grows year over year, yielding terrific experiences for our community and much-needed scholarship support for our students.
We hope you will join us next year at the 5th Annual Pistons Scholars Night at the Palace.
