The Pillar – February 2019

Why Do Families Choose Cornerstone?
Cornerstone provides students with a holistic K-12 education that serves them and their families from kindergarten through graduation and beyond.
We’ve produced
a
new video
to highlight the many reasons parents choose our schools for their children. We hope you’ll share it so that other families can learn about the benefits of a Cornerstone education.
Cornerstone Health + Technology High School Peer Leaders Give Back at Partner Morning
The Peer Leaders at Cornerstone Health + Technology High School (CH+THS) are top students who are maintaining good grades and staying up-to-date with their work. They contribute to the school’s success by assisting CH+THS counselor Carlotta Prince with college and career-related activities.
Since 2017, they’ve also been volunteering at Partner Morning. “They love giving back and mentoring younger students,” Prince told us. “Some of them are volunteering at the elementary schools that they came from, so they enjoy seeing their former teachers and going back to their former schools.” We appreciate these young leaders and their commitment to service!
Madison-Carver Academy Students Learn Business Skills Through Banking Program
Fifth through eighth grade students at Madison-Carver Academy (MCA) are honing their financial skills every Friday, managing a banking program through Michigan First Credit Union (MFCU) where they are able to open accounts with approval and co-signing by their parents. The students serve in different positions within the MCA Banking Program, such as security, management and marketing. They are mentored by MFCU employees, who volunteer their time to work with our students.

MCA Dean of Students and Cornerstone Banking Program sponsor Lois Robinson told us, “Programs like this help our middle-school students learn how to be more responsible and follow through on their commitments. Those are the things they need to embrace before they go to high school.” We’re grateful to

Michigan First Credit Union
, their representatives, and Ms. Robinson, who make our MCA Banking Program possible.

Will You Help Us Celebrate National Reading Month in March?
Studies show that students who have books at home are more likely to be successful, engaged readers. During the month of March, Cornerstone will introduce a campaign to put a new book into the hands of every one of Cornerstone’s 3,500 students, and add 3,500 books to our schools’ libraries.
The campaign launches via email and social media on March 1st. Every $20 donation provides one book to a Cornerstone student, and one book to his/her school library. Students will be able to choose their own books at a special Scholastic Book Fair later this spring. Watch your inbox on March 1st for your opportunity to donate and put books into the hands of Cornerstone students.
AMPLIFY Church Provides Support to Cornerstone Community
Since 2006, Pastor Corey Kennard of AMPLIFY Church has supported Washington-Parks Academy (WPA) families with Thanksgiving dinners, warm winter clothing, school supplies, and other necessities. He’s also hosted workshops and mentoring events for our students and families.
Kennard’s message is simple: he believes it is important to “BE the church” through practical assistance to those in need. We’re so grateful that Pastor Kennard puts that belief into action by supporting the WPA community.
Alumnus Derrin Samaroo Turns Internship into Career Opportunity
Cornerstone Health + Technology High School alumnus, Derrin Samaroo, loved his Cornerstone experience and the opportunities he was given through our
Career Pathways
.
As a senior, he was able to complete an internship at Lear Corporation. Through hard work, he turned that internship into a full-time position at Lear after graduation. Now he’s working in his field while attending college part-time on his way to earning an engineering degree. Congratulations, Derrin!
