High School Students Prepare for College with Senior Defense
At Cornerstone, we’re committed to ensuring our students are prepared for college and a successful career. One way we help them develop much-needed skills is through the Senior Defense project that every student must complete in order to graduate.
Senior Defense Coordinator, Crystal Jackson, guides our seniors as they learn how to conduct solid research, write a substantial paper, and present their findings in a live presentation to a panel of judges.
This year-long project helps prepare our Cornerstone seniors for college and career success in many ways.
Cornerstone Marketing Wins Gold Hermes Creative Award
Congratulations to Cornerstone’s marketing department for earning another Gold Hermes Creative Award for our enrollment marketing campaign, which includes a video and printed brochure.
Hermes Awards are given as part of an international competition recognizing excellence in marketing and communications, sponsored by the Association of Marketing & Communication Professionals (AMCP). We’re proud of the marketing team’s great work and how it contributes to our success as an organization.
PwC Sponsors Hour of Code for Cornerstone Students
We’re so fortunate to have PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC (PwC) and their team as Partners.
PwC has been a supporter of Cornerstone for several years, participating in the Partner Program and Hour of Code with our students.
Hour of Code, a one-hour coding session that helps students get comfortable with and learn about coding, will be included at three of our schools again this spring. We’re grateful that our students have the opportunity to learn about and practice coding skills.
Thank you, PwC!
Navarro-Skipper Family Appreciates Team Approach to Education
Alarice Navarro and Rod Skipper chose Cornerstone for their children after considering several possible schools. Mr. Skipper told us, “The staff works as a team to maximize our children’s education and I appreciate that.” He feels that Cornerstone teachers are helping his children prepare for successful futures by providing them with leadership and creative problem-solving skills. The best part? The children love attending Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy.
Give2Read Provides Books for Every Cornerstone Student
Our Give2Read initiative, which took place during National Reading Month in March, sought donations to buy books for our students.
We’re pleased to report that we raised the funds to give a free book to every Cornerstone student! We will be keeping the Give2Read donation page open throughout the year, so if you’d like to contribute to new books for the schools, please do!
Cornerstone High School Students Perform on the Hamilton Stage
This year, the Cornerstone Health + Technology High School’s junior class participated in a two-week history curriculum, based on the stage play “Hamilton.”
The Hamilton Education Program was created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and allows eligible high schools to integrate Alexander Hamilton and his era into classroom studies. At the end of the two-week unit, students submit a video of their own performance of a Hamilton story to the Institute.
Three Cornerstone students – Desmond Farhadi, Shardai Lewis, and Daye’La Ford – were selected to perform the same Hamilton story they recorded in their video on stage at the Fisher Theater, live, for an audience of 2000+ before the Hamilton show in Detroit. All Cornerstone juniors also received a ticket to attend that performance.
Congratulations, Desmond, Shardai, and Daye’La!
Cornerstone Values Art in Education
Did you know that students engaged in the arts had fewer disciplinary infractions and higher attendance?
Studying the arts also helps to increase graduation rates and test scores. Cornerstone Madison-Carver Academy art teacher, Christa Perdue-Daniels, shares more about why art is so important to the healthy development of children’s hearts and minds in a recent article in our Three Pillars blog.
Join Us in Celebrating our Graduates!
