The Pillar – September 2019

Welcome Back to School!
This school year is off to a great start and our students are settling into the new routine well. We caught up with a few of them to find out how they were feeling about the new school year.
We found out they all enjoy school at Cornerstone and have big plans for the future! Click the link below to meet them and find out what they had to say.
Cornerstone Students on
America’s Got Talent
Did you know? Cornerstone Schools has three students that sing and dance with the Detroit Youth Choir!
We’re so proud of how wonderfully they represented us during the competition and congratulate the entire group for their 2nd place finish on
America’s Got Talent.
Did you hear they will be appearing in the
Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade?

Leading Detroit Corporations Provide Student Internships
Students at Cornerstone Health + Technology High School are looking forward to beginning their internships in October. More than 30 students have earned internships at some of the top local employers. They will spend one day per week on-site at their internship placement, gaining career experience and hands-on training.
We are grateful to all of the employers who extend this opportunity to our students. These internship experiences provide experiential learning that students carry with them long after graduation.
Our 2019-20 High School Internship Providers are:
  • Ascension Providence Hospital
  • Beaumont – Dearborn
  • Beaumont – Royal Oak
  • Conifer Insurance
  • Detroit Zoo
  • Guardian Industries
  • Lear Corporation
  • Integrated Manufacturing Assembly
  • Magni Corporation
  • Magni Industries
  • OHM Advisors
  • OpTech
  • Process Control & Instrumentation
  • University of Detroit Mercy
We will check in with selected students throughout the year to share more about their internships and the great things they are learning.
Join us for an exciting night of
Detroit Basketball
We’re excited to announce that our Cornerstone Jefferson-Douglass Academy Boys’ Basketball team will be playing on the big court at Little Caesar’s Arena (LCA) this spring!
Jefferson-Douglass Athletic Coordinator, Ashley Knight, is the point person for this fantastic opportunity for our young men to raise funds for their team. “For just $65, you get to see our boys team in action against Crescent, and then stay for the Pistons vs. Lakers game. In addition, a portion of the proceeds goes back to the Jefferson-Douglass Athletic Association to help pay for uniforms, tournaments, and other expenses.”
Click the link below for more details. We’ll see you at LCA on March 22nd!
Family Calendars Help Create Calm
Doesn’t it feel like we’re all busier than ever? A family calendar can help your family create structure and expectations, to keep everyone on track, happy and calm through the sometimes hectic school year.
In our latest
Three Pillars Blog, Cornerstone Washington-Parks Academy 5th – 8th Grade Principal, Monica Thompson, shares the benefits of a family calendar and the importance of planning family time.
Keeping Our Schools Safe
School safety is a primary concern at Cornerstone, and we take significant measures to ensure our students and staff are safe and secure at all times. Read more about Cornerstone’s commitment to school safety by clicking below.
Join Us for Partner Morning
The first Partner Morning of the 2019-20 school year is the week of October 7-11. Students and staff are looking forward to meeting Partners and renewing friendships. The theme for this first Partner Morning is Career and Life Pathways, and Partners will share with a group of students about their career path, college, military, home life and more. New Partners are always welcome and you can learn more by clicking below.
